Choosing Your Next CPU: Intel or AMD?
By Andrew Po
Few things generate such heated debates among the tech crowd as the old AMD vs Intel discussion. Both sites have fans which buy the products of their preferred company, no matter what the competitor is offering. That is not always the best approach if you're looking to get the most for your money, however. Since Intel and AMD are the only two major players in the home CPU market, it's no wonder that there are various urban myths floating around regarding these CPUs. "Intel is better for work while AMD is better for games", or "AMD processors frequently overheat", and my personal favorite, "the processor with more GHz is always the faster one" which lately is getting replaced by "the CPU with most cores is always the fastest one". Needless to say, most of these are false (especially the one about AMD overheating - all modern CPUs are more reliable than ever). The intelligent way to pick the CPU with the best price / performance is to look at "real world" tests - various Intel and AMD CPU benchmarks offered by computer hardware review sites like Overclockers or Tom's Hardware. I recommend you avoid synthetic benchmarks since they don't always reflect how well the CPU will perform "real" tasks like video games, video encoding, code compiling and so on. By choosing your CPU brand depending on real performance of the product instead of your personal feelings about the companies, you will be able to get a faster PC without spending more.
Andrew has been an avid gamer for years. As all video game fans know, you have to upgrade your PC from time to time to keep up with the increasing system requirements. This article is about choosing the best CPU for your money. Check out Andrew's game blog for more info.
