Common Causes and Solutions of Application Errors
By Andrew Po
Windows application errors are not only annoying, but potentially dangerous as well, since they can cause data loss, wasting your hard work. In this short writeup I'll overview some of the common causes of exe application errors, and what you can do to solve them. Perhaps one of the most common errors is the memory read/write failure that looks similar to this: The instruction at *address* referenced memory at *address*. The memory could not be *read* / *written*. Sadly there's more than one cause for an application to give an error like this. It could be that your RAM or HDD is faulty and the program can't physically read or write from that location. Sometimes the application isn't properly coded and creates a buffer overflow, attempting to write to a location in memory exceeding its allocated boundaries. The things you can do is check your RAM for errors using a tool like Memtest, make sure you have the latest stable (not beta) build of the application, and check for software conflicts. For example, you shouldn't attempt to use two antivirus monitors at the same time, and so on. One more widespread problem is the application outright refusing to start: The application failed to initialize properly *error code* This is not as bad as the previous error since it most likely indicates a program with the application itself, rather than your system. Make sure you study the help files and find out what operating systems the application is compatible with. You might need to try running it in Windows Compatibility Mode that all Win OS's since WinXP have. It's also likely that you need certain extensions or .dll files to run this program. Common requirements are Microsoft's .NET Framework, C++ Runtime or Sun Java. These are all available to download for free. |
