How to Manage Windows Startup Programs
By Andrew Po
In this short writeup I'll tell you how to manage all those pesky programs that load automatically on Windows startup. Why you'd even want to touch those things? Well, first, all those applications slow down loading of Windows. It can get really noticeable over time as you "collect" more and more of those things sitting in your taskbar - update checkers, quick launch agents and what not. The second reason is that if you encounter a Windows startup error, you might want to selectively disable startup programs one by one until you isolate the one that causes the problem. An invaluable tool to manage Windows startup programs and services is already included in all modern Windows operating systems. It's called msconfig and can be accessed by Start < Run < msconfig.exe command. mcsonfig allows you to check and disable any service or program, preventing them from automatically starting when Windows loads. However, to truly remove it from the startup you'll need to delete it at the source (e.g. the registry key that launches it, or the Startup folder in your start menu). In other words, msconfig is good as a diagnostic tool, but unchecking any of the programs in your startup list will cause msconfig to load during every boot sequence and disable it. Once you diagnose a program that you want to remove from startup, you can use the tips in this artice about removing startup programs through registry to properly delete the registry keys that cause the software to launch automatically. |
