Main Differenes Between Trance, House and Techno Music

Techno, trance and house are all genres of dance music, very popular in night clubs all over the world. People who don't listen to this genre often claim that it all "sounds the same" and use the terms like techno and trance interchangeably. However, there are some subtle differences between these styles of of electronic dance music. Techno, trance and house are all EMD genres that usually use a 4/4 time signature. So how do they differ from each other then? Let's take a look at techno first. The tempo of techno tracks is usually between 120 and 150 bpm (beats per minute). It's the most "minimalistic" of all three styles, mainly instrumental (e.g. no vocals), and emphasizes beat patterns and rhythm rather than melody. Trance usually has a tempo of 130 to 155 bpm, which makes it slightly faster than techno and house music. It uses synthesizers heavily, and the tracks tend to build up, slow down and build again (especially in progressive trance) as opposed to steady flow of techno. It also uses vocals often (there's even a sub-genre called vocal trance). House music has a prominent bass drum in every beat, but can also feature synthesizers, funk and pop samples and electronically enhanced vocals. It generally ranges from 118 to 135 beats per minute, which makes it slower than techno and trance.
