(Re)Training Adult Dogs

Many people believe that, just like the saying goes, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. However, it's not entirely true. While dogs form their personalities as puppies, they can learn new tricks even as adults - with proper training and a reward system, of course. House training is a very important matter for pet owners. It's probably easier to housetrain an adult dog which hasn't been potty trained before at all, than houestrain one which has been taught improperly. The important things to remember is to have patience with your dog, and focus on rewarding for doing good things instead of punishing them for the "accidents". If you punish, the dog most likely won't understand what it did wrong and it could cause all sorts of problems in the future. There are a lot of great books and online guides for training dogs. If you are looking to housetrain an adult dog, I recommend you search online or visit your local library and pickup a quality guide for free.

Last year I've had to look after a ~2 year old dog which hadn't been housetrained properly. Possibly abused, too. It turns out you can housetrain adult dogs however.

It worked for most of my college friends, so there's no reason it won't work for dogs.
