Sharing Your Internet Connection and Managing Bandwidth
Let's say you want to share your internet connection with a neighbor or two. You also want to be able to manage bandwidth (give higher priorities to certain types of traffic), so when one of the people in the LAN is downloading big files, he won't clog up the connection and make it nearly unusable for the others. There are several choices you can make in such a case. First one is use an older computer with Linux installed on it as a router. This can be rather complicated for users unfamiliar with this OS. Besides, a separate PC might be noisy and use too much power. It also has to be turned on 24/7 for your internet connection to work. The second choice is buying a cheap router (like WRT54GL - $60) and installing third party firmware on it, which lets you control the priorities for certain types of traffic, too. It's simpler to use and needs way less power. Of course, you can always just agree with your LAN neighbors that you will only download bigger files at certain times of the day, but that doesn't always work! |
