Turn your $60 router into a powerful device
This advice will be useful to you if you want to or are sharing your internet connection with someone else. It's likely that you will run into problems, such as slow browsing speed when the other person (roommate or whatever) is downloading large files, using YouTube, and such. The solution is to buy a smart, powerful router that can do QoS (Quality of Service). In simple terms, that means you can give priorities to different types of internet traffic. Usually only expensive routers have really good QoS, but here's a trick. Buy a cheap $60 router (I have Linksys WRT54GL personally) and install third party firmware on it. It's quite safe; almost as safe as upgrading your original firmware, in fact - but there is a danger of "bricking" your router if, for example, there is a power outage during the flashing process. The firmware change can be done through simple web interface and you need no special skills whatsoever. The router (Linksys WRT54GL in my case) is accessible at 192.168.1.1 IP adress (or see your manual). As for firmware choice, I highly recommend Tomato - look for the link below. Now you might ask, why upgrade in the first place? WRT54GL has some QoS capabilities right out of the box! Well, first of all, these are nothing compared to capabilities of Tomato. I have personally tested many firmwares and Tomato greatly improves the performance of your router. For example, with default firmware, I couldn't browse the internet while using p2p programs heavily, but that was fixed after I installed Tomato on my router. After you flash your router's firmware, the next step is configuring the QoS for your internet sharing. You don't need any special skills here either, because Tomato comes with a special set of QoS rules already. By default, the web browsing is prioritized, and the p2p downloads get the lowest priority. That means web browsing comes first, and p2p gets what's left over. You just have to add some special rules to the list for your own programs (Skype or other voice chat, games, etc.). I couldn't be more happier with my "Tomato" WRT54GL router - it's perfect for sharing my internet connection with my neighbors. I can game without any lag while they download something, they can browse the web while I watch a streaming video. All this just for 60 bucks, perfect! |
