What is Registry Defragmenting
By Andrew Po
A lot of software appeared lately that claims to "defragment" your registry and in so doing boost the performance of your PC. What does this process involve exactly, and you even need it in the first place? First of all, registry defragmentation is a lot like disk defrag, which you're probably familiar with. Over time, files get "fragmented", i.e. there are small parts of them scattered all over the HDD, so the reading heads of the disk have to move a lot to read it all. Defragmenting them and putting the file into one region of the HDD improves the reading speed. Registry defragmentation is quite similar. All new applications you install make changes to the registry. When you uninstall them, they usually - but not always - remove the old information. Over time, your registry file grows; not only that, some "holes" appear where registry keys were deleted, and it loses its logical structure. This might mean that Windows will read it a bit slower and you'll lose some performance. A registry defrag program will defragment and compact the whole thing, making it smaller and faster. I have to warn you though that you should always make a backup before using a registry defragmenting program. Not all of this software is good! Furthermore, you shouldn't expect a huge performance gain, unless your registry is terribly cluttered. Most likely you won't even notice the minor speed increase - however, you will usually see a 25% or more reduction in registry file size. |
